I think you'll find it dates back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celts. So how can that be an ehhhh, Yankee Doodle Dandy event?

yea , but did the celts not treat it as a religious festival ? i see scorpios point , it was pretty much forgoten by all except maybe a few practising pagons for the best part of those 2000 years . that was till the americans decided to ressurect it . ive no idea how it spread round the world like a virus , but it has . i think it may all be just a conspiracy started by poor american pumpkin growers in a slack year . and what the **** is this trick or treating bullshit all about , besides a beginers course in extortion . *()(*^

I had nothing against halloween until the bloody trick or treaters arrived in the uk in the 80's. Then it became 'pay us or we trash your garden' time. Ended up locking the gate on the 31st and was contemplating barbed wire. (would never have been a problem if they had let us have guns in the UK!).

Had 2 broken gates (torn off their hinges) and a variety of plants ripped up. Thankfully, due to their excesses, in decline now. But Halloween is a great party theme, even for us mature (Ha!) types.
The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.

"trick or treat?" The "trick" is a (usually idle) threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trick-or-treating

Typically teenagers roam around trick or treating only to cause mischief and would TP (toilet paper) peoples house that weren't into "treating", those who were really uptight about it got egged.

Can't say I ever had any problems with it back in the UK, just buy a couple of packs of fun size treats and give them to those who came a knocking. That or turn off all the lights and lay on the floor in darkness all night, which ever takes your fancy.
I might even go as far as to say I like Halloween, Christmas and any other excuse to have a good time because to me they are just that. I also agree with Rick, Halloween is a great theme for us adults, nothing like seeing those ladies dressed up as sexy, witches, devils, nurses and nuns! Yeah I know all ready, I'm going to hell.

I personally hate ALL holidays, and with exception of the little one, Gem's birthday, pretty much ignore recognition of them, if i even remember them, think easter blew by this year without me remembering till that day or after, because of news story. loved moving here, as buddhist country, no xmas, no western or christian holidays, .......... valentines, one of the most ridiculous that i never recognized accept as a way for flower / candy shops / restaurants / jewelers to boost business and never participated, much to the dismay of few gals, oh well, door swings both ways, cya.

find if very strange that foreigners enjoy bringing their holidays with them..........except as a good reason to socialize, pig out and party..........don't find the need for holidays.

the only thing i enjoy about holidays is xmas music, which i play anytime of the year *****
